The Data Science Institute, co-headed by Dirk Valkenborg, provides multi-angle integrated methodological support in all aspects of data science and applies its expertise in mathematical and statistical models and methods relevant to the particular research area. The transition towards high-throughput data technology to address biological questions was a main driver to extend the expertise to the bioinformatics domain. More recently, the focus shifted to informatics and data science in the field of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics with strong expertise in mass spectrometry-based signal processing and next-generation sequencer data analysis. The group developed and maintains QCQuan, a webtool for automated quality control and statistical analysis of protein expression following labelled mass spectrometry experiments. The tool has been recognised as an ELIXIR Belgium Node service since 2021.
